USPS Modernizes Logistics Network as Financial Pressure Builds

The U.S. Postal Service is continuing to modernize its logistics and transportation network as it works to improve package flow, reduce costs, and strengthen delivery operations. According to a recent Transport Topics article, Postmaster General and CEO David Steiner told the U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs that USPS is facing serious financial pressure and needs structural changes to support its long-term business model.

At the same time, USPS is investing in major operational improvements. The agency has been redesigning its facilities, processing network, and transportation routes to better support today’s mix of mail and package volume. A key part of this strategy includes the rollout of regional processing and distribution centers, or RPDCs, which are designed to replace older, less efficient facility networks with a more structured hub-and-spoke system.

USPS is also expanding larger sorting and delivery centers, known as SDCs, to help streamline final-mile delivery operations. These facilities include modern package-sorting equipment, electric vehicle-charging infrastructure, and more efficient transportation links between processing facilities and local delivery operations.

Why this matters for shippers:
For businesses that rely on parcel delivery, e-commerce fulfillment, or domestic distribution, changes within the USPS network could affect package movement, delivery performance, and long-term logistics planning. As carriers continue to adjust their networks, shippers should pay close attention to delivery reliability, cost changes, and backup carrier options.

Earth Services perspective:
Supply chains do not end at the port or warehouse. Customs clearance, freight forwarding, distribution, and final-mile delivery all play a role in getting goods to the end customer. Importers and e-commerce businesses should continue reviewing their full logistics strategy to make sure each stage of the supply chain is prepared for changing carrier networks and market conditions.
